Our hearts are heavy as we grieve for the Sandy Hook, Conn., families and school community.  To remember them and reassure ours, this might be a good time to hold all the children and parents close in community, hands and shoulders touching, while singing and moving to music.

Today is Halloween 2012, and I can hear the kids heading for our house. We get a lot of trick-or-treaters because we live on a great old residential street across from the elementary school. Mars and I try to alternate half-hours in answering the door so one of us can continue working, but the door-opener keeps shouting to come down and see another neighbor's tiny cuties.

   Last year, when it was my turn to answer the door, something wonderful happened that raises my spirits whenever I get grouchy about the priorities of our society.  I was just handing out the last goodies from the plastic pumpkin to three small princesses as two large middle-school pirates came up our walk.  "I'm so sorry, guys," I apologized, "but we just ran out of candy.  If you come back in a little while, we'll have more."  The taller boy held out his bag to me.  "Here, take some of mine," he said. "Maybe it will tide you over."   

   You will be glad to know I did not sob on his shoulder, but I did find out his name is Jayden and I wish I could thank his parents for their roles in raising this fine human being.  As I write, I am hoping Jayden will ring our doorbell this year.
